Encaustic 

Encaustic Art Is an ancient painting medium first practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which coloured pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used—some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment.

My own personal approach is to use pure beeswax mixed with damar resin at around a 7 : 1 ratio, I also purchase pure pigments and create my own colours from them. If you are going to have a go at creating your own Encaustic artwork then there are various suppliers of wax colour blocks, if however, you wish to mix your own, do always wear a mask as some of the Pigments are toxic.
